La Dolce Vita in Amsterdam West

Hannah’s is a restaurant in Amsterdam West, where La Dolce Vita is held in high regard! A unique place where you can have breakfast, lunch, a nice cup of coffee and at the end of the week (Friday and Saturday) have a drink or dinner.

It is a private initiative that was born out of love for Hannah, the owner’s sister, and the disabled fellow human being.

In addition, Hannah’s hosts supported work programmes where people with intellectual disabilities can learn and develop. People who would otherwise be at home because they cannot do paid work are given the opportunity and space to participate in society at Hannah’s. It is a place where everyone who is different – just like us actually – experiences that despite our differences, we are all human. At Hannah’s, everyone participates! This means that your coffee, lunch or aperitif is served with extra love, care and attention.

My sweet sister Hannah

‘La Famiglia’ Centraal

At our house

In many families around the Mediterranean, ‘La Famiglia’ is central, at our house it is the same. Mediterranean scenes in the kitchen: the entire contents of the market bag on the counter and in between trying to cook again. At our house there was always a wonderful and cozy chaos. How my mother managed to conjure up the most fantastic dishes in this chaos is still a mystery to me.

What I also got from my mother is that everyone is always welcome, eating along is never a problem! Besides the delicious food, nice wines, endless dining and good conversations that are central to our home, my sister Hannah also holds a special place.

Hannah

Hannah was born healthy but became seriously ill eleven days after her birth. The doctors told my parents that she would not survive, but fortunately Hannah proved otherwise! It is still unclear what happened at the time, but Hannah suffered brain damage. This hasn’t always been easy for our family, but it has taught us that ‘La Famiglia’ is number one!

My inspiration

Hannah is the biggest inspiration for Hannah’s. I’m glad I’m her big sister and that she helped make me the person I am today. Thanks to Hannah, there’s a Hannah’s!

Everyone is always welcome

At Hannah’s we strive for an inclusive society. Initially, we thought we would go for Italian cuisine at Hannah’s. But why focus on one cuisine if you strive for inclusivity?

At Hannah’s we serve the most delicious dishes from the Mediterranean cuisine, with an Italian base. The warmth around the Mediterranean Sea can be felt and tasted at Hannah’s.

The Mediterranean cuisine is represented by many different cuisines. Think of countries such as: Italy, Spain, Portugal, Southern France and Greece, but also the Moroccan and Levantine cuisine (Israel, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria). In addition, we also include the cuisines of Mediterranean Africa (Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia). Enough inspiration for delicious dishes and inspiration for a place where everyone feels at home!

Laura

About me

My dream

I am Laura and I have followed my dream! At Hannah’s I want to combine my love for my mentally handicapped sister Hannah and my love for being a hostess. I would like to create a place for a target group that cannot do paid work, but a target group that does deserve a place to work, develop and contribute to society!

In addition to studying Applied Psychology, I have always been active in the hospitality industry. After my studies I had several catering related jobs.

In search of meaning

During the search for myself and the search for my passion I discovered that I lacked meaning in my life. Three things came together: the experience with and love for my sister, my psychology education and my love for good food and drinks (catering). The idea of Hannah's was born!

As the big sister of a sister with a mental disability, the profession of 'caring for & guiding' was instilled in me from an early age. My parents and I have been taking care of Hannah all my life. That is very normal for us and we have met a lot of love. We do not know any different!

Day care

This is how we know how important appropriate and personal care is for people with a disability, but also how scarce it is. I have noticed that there is no day care in the form of catering in Amsterdam West and I know from experience how nice the combination of both is.

With Hannah’s I want to create a warm, nice and safe place for the participants, but also a warm, nice and safe place for our guests. I hope to welcome you all soon at Hannah’s, the place that brings together and connects!

A presto a Hannah’s! Ciao!
